About the 2011 Tenant Board member election
Every tenant and leaseholder of Gloucester City Homes was sent a ballot form to vote for their preferred candidate. These had to be returned to us by no later than noon on Friday 30th September. The result of the election was announced at our Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 5th October 2011.
This year, there were two candidates standing for the one available tenant position on the Board. We asked our candidates a series of set questions (which were developed with the help of members of Customer Forum). Their answers were provided in the ballot pack to help voters decide who to choose.
The Candidates
MARGARET DAY
Please tell us a little about your background
I have lived in Westgate for the past 15 years.
I was born in Gloucester. I enjoy music, dining out with friends, and reading. I am an animal lover and a supporter of local activities and the city activities.
What skills and experience would you be able to bring to your role as a Board member?
My experience is that I have sat on the Board for 6 months which I really enjoyed. I think I have a lot of skills and experience as I have sat and still sit on a range of panels. I constantly go on training courses to gain knowledge.
What personal qualities would you bring to the role?
My qualities I think are that I am passionate about City Homes but also this city. Which has so much and together we can have and achieve a lot more. It’s a lovely place to live and a thriving city which has a lot going for it.
Tell us about any current involvement you have with GCH
I am Vice Chair of Customer Forum and I also sit on the GCH Services Committee. I am also involved with the Housing Options Panel, focus groups and the Pets Policy. Also I am involved with the ASB steering group.
Is there any further information that would benefit your nomination?
Just to say I would really like to sit on the Board again and if I am lucky enough to do so I will do my very best for City Homes and the residents of this city. I think I could bring a lot to the Board, also I think that I could learn a lot as well to pass on for the future of everyone in the city.
MIKE GROOM
Please tell us a little about your background
I have been a tenant for more than 20 years, living in Coney Hill. I am involved in Barnwood Residents Association as Chair for 6 years; also Chair of Barnwood Community Partnership for a second term (4 years) and chair of Coney Hill Neighbourhood Project for 10 years. Over the years I’ve helped fundraising for local play areas. I have been involved with the options appraisals from which GCH was born then on the Shadow Board from its inception.
What skills and experience would you be able to bring to your role as a Board member?
Able to talk and listen to tenants and their views and problems. Over the last 7 years as a Board member I have sat on countless groups to help GCH reach their 3 stars. There was a lot learn and still to learn.
What personal qualities would you bring to the role?
I’m a person who will always step forward to help communities work hard for the better of Gloucester
Tell us about any current involvement you have with GCH
I am a Tenant Board Member, a Tenant Inspector and on focus groups. I am currently working on the Housing Options Panel.
Is there any further information that would benefit your nomination?
In 2008/9, I won the national TPAS award for Tenant of the Year also runner-up for the ALMO. I would encourage other tenants to come forward to work alongside GCH.
A quote from Barnwood: “Mike is first port of call for many tenants with housing issues” Cllr Phil McLellan.
