Charter Court celebrates Chinese New Year

Charter Court Chinese New Year event

Residents of Charter Court sheltered housing scheme hosted a special Chinese New Year event this week for scheme residents and the Gloucester Chinese community.

A traditional Chinese meal was enjoyed by the 16 residents and 14 members of the Chinese community who attended the event, which was followed by a quiz in Chinese and English with prizes for the winning English and Chinese teams. A very lively raffle rounded off the afternoon.

With the New Year marking the start of the Year of the Dragon, the dining hall at Charter Court was decorated with Chinese dragons, fans and other decorations kindly loaned by Gloucester Chinese Resource Centre.

Gloucester City Homes provided 25 £ coins to fill the traditional New Year red envelopes – given as a sign of good fortune for the following year, and Charter Court Residents Association contributed a small a piece of Chinese jewellery for each envelope.

The event was organized by Gloucester City Homes’ staff Sally Elway, Lyn Scudamore and Gwynne Brown with Chinese community field worker Carena Sharpley.

GCH Community Scheme Manager Gwynne Brown says: ‘We were delighted to welcome so many members of the local Chinese community to this special event to mark the start of the Year of the Dragon. The afternoon was so successful that it is planned to make it an annual event!
