Faith, Religion and Belief

The Employment equality (Religion or belief) regulation defines religion and belief as being any religion, religious belief or similar philosophical belief. (It does not include any philosophical or political belief unless it is similar to a religious belief.) The legislation makes it is illegal for employers to discriminate against someone on the grounds of their religion, faith or belief.

It is unlawful to discriminate against workers because of their religion or belief or lack of religion or belief. Employers should ensure they have policies in place which are designed to prevent discrimination in:

  • recruitment and selection
  • determining pay
  • training and development
  • selection for promotion
  • discipline and grievances
  • countering bullying and harassment.
